What is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2® (Projects In Controlled Environments) is a widely used internationally recognized process-based method for effective project management. PRINCE2 is the de facto project management standard for public projects in the UK.

PRINCE2 is an adaptable project management methodology that provides a framework of concepts, principles, roles, processes, and practices for successful project delivery. It is not a rigid set of rules, but rather a flexible approach that can be tailored to the specific needs of any organization and project, regardless of type or size. Initially, PRINCE2 was primarily used in traditional project environments with well-defined requirements and planned stages.

In recent years, PRINCE2 Agile has emerged as a valuable adaptation of PRINCE2, specifically designed to accommodate projects with uncertain or evolving requirements. This approach blends the structured framework of PRINCE2 with the flexibility of Agile methodologies. Furthermore, PRINCE2 itself remains dynamic, with the latest iteration, PRINCE2 7, launched in September 2023. This version builds upon previous editions ( PRINCE2 6th Edition known as PRINCE2 2017 and PRINCE2 5th known as PRINCE2 2009) to provide project managers with even more up-to-date guidance and best practices. 

PRINCE2 Certification Training Path

The PRINCE2 qualification scheme foresees two levels of certifications with corresponding exams: Foundation and Practitioner.

PRINCE2 Foundation certification

The PRINCE2 Foundation course confirms a candidate's knowledge and understanding of the PRINCE2 project management methodology, enabling them to work effectively within a PRINCE2 project team. This certification is a prerequisite for the PRINCE2 Practitioner level.

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification

The PRINCE2 Practitioner course expands on the foundation knowledge, teaching candidates how to apply PRINCE2 principles to diverse projects. The course aims to ensure, through a final exam, that candidates can effectively tailor and utilize the PRINCE2 methodology in real-world scenarios.

While self-study is possible for experienced candidates with a strong background in Project Management and access to the PRINCE2 official manual, the recommended path to PRINCE2 certification involves accredited official courses that have undergone scrutiny by Peoplecert on behalf of Axelos. These courses cover the exam material comprehensively and are taught by certified trainers with real-world PRINCE2 experience.
