ITIL® (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is the most widespread and globally used framework for IT Service Management. It has undergone several changes over time since the first version of the late '80s to the version of the early 2000s, known as ITIL v2. Later ITIL v3 was the term frequently used for the 2007 update, which should be more correctly referred to as ITIL 2007. The last edition of ITIL was published in 2011 and, therefore, is referred to as ITIL 2011. ITIL v3 is now used to refer to ITIL 2011. The most recent version of ITIL is ITIL4, issued in 2019. You can find more information on it here.
ITIL v3 (often referred also as ITIL 2011 or ITIL) provides a cohesive set of best practices derived from public and private sectors. ITIL v3 helps IT Service Management providers, whether they are in-house providers or operating at market level, to deliver quality services that are in line with business needs, by developing the necessary processes, functions and capabilities.
Key benefits of ITIL v3 (or ITIL 2011)
- Improvement in IT services
- Reduction of costs
- Improvement in customer satisfaction due to a better approach to service delivery
- Improvement in productivity
- Better use of skills and experience
- Improved supply of services compared to third parties
ITIL certification pathway
The ITIL v3 Qualification Scheme provides a modular approach to gain competences on the ITIL v3 framework and is made up of a series of qualifications based on different aspects of ITIL v3 Best Practice, with varying degrees of depth and detail.
There are five levels of qualification:
ITIL v3 Foundation (often referred also as ITIL 2011 or simply ITIL Foundation) beginner level
The ITIL® v3 Foundation level is the 'entry level' qualification and offers basic knowledge of the key elements, concepts and terminology used in the ITIL v3 service lifecycle, including the links between the lifecycle stages, the processes used, and their contribution to Service Management practices.
ITIL v3 Practitioner (often referred as ITIL 2011 or simply ITIL Practitioner) Level
The ITIL® v3 Practitioner level has been created as a stepping stone between the Foundation and Intermediate levels and aims to improve an individual's capacity to adopt and adapt ITIL in their organisation.
ITIL v3 Intermediate (often referred as ITIL 2011 or simply ITIL Intermediate) Level
The Intermediate level qualifications have a modular structure, articulated in two streams, lifecycle (suitable for those intending to focus on the process and practice elements used, and the management capabilities needed to deliver quality Service Management practices) and capabilities (most applicable to those who are looking to gain specialized, knowledge in one or more processes, with focus on the day-to-day execution of ITIL v3 practices and how they interact), with each module providing a different focus on IT Service Management. You can take as few or as many Intermediate qualifications as you need. The Intermediate modules go into more detail than the Foundation level and Practitioner, and provide an industry-recognized qualification.
ITIL v3 Expert (often referred as ITIL 2011 or simply ITIL Expert)
The ITIL v3 Expert level of certification is aimed at those individuals who are interested in demonstrating advanced knowledge of the ITIL v3 programme in its entirety. The certificate is awarded to candidates who have done a series of ITIL v3 qualifications and have achieved optimum knowledge and competency in ITIL v3 Best Practice.
ITIL v3 Master Level
To obtain the ITIL v3 Master qualification individuals must be able to explain and justify how they choose and apply a range of ITIL v3 knowledge, principles, methods and techniques, as well as how ITIL v3 management techniques can be maintained in order to achieve the desired business results. This is demonstrated through practical assignments.
